This applies to all travelers who can visit the UK without a visa, such as Canadians (see the list of applicable countries below). Starting in April 2025, all visa-free travelers will need an ETA to enter the UK.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is an ETA?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK ETA is a pre-travel authorization system that screens travelers before they enter the UK. It helps the British government track and pre-screen travelers, identifying any potential security threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-European travelers can start applying on November 27, 2024, for travel starting January 8, 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European travelers can start applying on March 5, 2025, for travel beginning April 2, 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Who can apply?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eligibility to apply depends on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The date you are traveling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your nationality as indicated in your passport (see the applicable citizenship list below)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How do I apply?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can apply for the ETA online or through the UK ETA mobile app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who does not need an ETA?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not need an ETA if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You already have a visa<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have permission to live, work, or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status or right of abode)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are a British or Irish citizen or hold dual citizenship<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are traveling with a British overseas territories citizen passport<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You live in Ireland and are traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How much does it cost?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The application fee is \u00a310, which is non-refundable. This applies to everyone, including babies and children. You can apply for an ETA on behalf of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How long does the process take?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It typically takes 3 working days, but it may take longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Can I apply as a group?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, each person must apply individually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How do I know if my application was successful?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will receive an email confirming that your ETA has been granted. It will be linked to the passport used for the application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How long is the ETA valid for?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ETA is valid for 2 years, allowing multiple entries into the UK. If you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What can I do with an ETA?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an ETA, you can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, family visits, business, or short-term study<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay in the UK for up to 3 months on the Creative Worker visa concession<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engage in permitted paid engagements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transit through the UK, if you pass through UK border control (\u2018landside\u2019 transit). You don\u2019t need an ETA for \u2018airside\u2019 transit if you won\u2019t pass through border control.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What cannot be done with an ETA?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay longer than 6 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work for a UK company or as a self-employed person (unless you\u2019re engaging in a permitted paid engagement or working under the Creative Worker visa concession)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claim public funds (benefits)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live in the UK through frequent or successive visits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership (you\u2019ll need to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Can I get a UK ETA with a criminal record?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A criminal record does not automatically result in a denied application, as each case is reviewed individually by the UK Home Office. The following factors are considered:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The severity of the offense<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country where the offense occurred<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long ago the offense occurred<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sentence served (if any)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minor offenses or older convictions are less likely to cause refusal. However, serious offenses, particularly those related to violence, terrorism, or national security, may lead to denial.
